Before I say anything, let me remind you all that there is nothing better than “Quality Content” for any website. If you have quality content, your dependence on other sites is minimal. You will always get good reward for your hard work to publish your own content.

However, even when you have great content, you may need some additional works to make your site more visible to the world. You can do too many thing. I have tried many and in this article, I will only point to few ones that do not consume too much of time and are proved to be very useful to me.

  1. Link Building : Link Building is tricky. It also takes time. If you have a low traffic site, your request for approving a link is often denied. So, start link building with sites where you many have one of your friends as admin or moderator. You can spend too much of time to find email addresses for each site owner and write emails, but I recommend that you try other methods first. Once your site is popular, you will be receiving “add link” requests very often.
  2. Directory Submission: Well this one is too much discussed but probably does not really very well unless you are going for PAID listings from Yahoo or so on. There are too many directory listing site and most of them requires authentications and has some long forms to fill up. Even after working hard for numerous directory listing websites you may find that only few of them actually approve your listing. Big waste of time. In addition to that you will start getting too many emails from the directory listing websites about how a “Paid” submission might work wonderful for you! Just do one time Submission to DMOZ and forget about other directory listings.
  3. RSS publishing: Now, this is something you can do to promote your site immensely. If you have some of the CMS software/Blogging software based site such as Wordpress, Drupal etc, they have RSS capability included already. Just go and submit your site to some of the major blog listing directories. They are much better than the Directory listing providers.
  4. Social Network Site Submission: There are many social network type link submission sites. The best is Digg.Com. Write your articles, go to www.digg.com and submit your article - few clicks and you will see wonderful results. You can try few others such as Stumbleupon etc.
  5. Engage Visitors: Have a small comment form, or a forum where your site visitors can interact with you. This is too important. If you have a quality site, your visitor will recommend to their friends and families.
  6. Send Emails to subscribed users: If you have subscriptions enabled for your website, do send some emails few times a month with some of the most important articles on your site.

There are traditional ways too that you should always follow such as adding “Title” tag, “Meta” tags and “Description” tags to all of your web pages.

Hopefully you will see a rapid increase in traffic if you are doing few or all of the above suggested tricks.

Comments disappeared from Wordpress? Solution

I don’t know how did that happen, but yesterday I noticed all of the comments were vanished from one of my wordpress blog : Calcutta Tube.
I Panicked, as I should, and then tried to search google to see if anybody else had the same trouble. I found few cases for older version of wordpress. Such as for wordpress 2.3, the solution for “disappeard comments” are given by Steve Ferson. I found that David Perkinson had the same problem but he mentioned that it was related to some plugin issue. He thought “google analytics” was the problem plugin for “disappearing comments”. Well I do not have “Google Analytics” installed in my blog, so what is the solution. I checked all plugins to make sure they are “up to date”. Updated few plugins that we not up to date. But still the problem remained. So, I did the most useful thing that I should have done in the first place.

I have Cpanel installed in my server. So, my trick is useful if you have Cpanel or you know how to repair your database!

Log on to your cpanel and you should see something like the image below. Click on the “MySQL Databases”. It will list all the databases you are using in your site.

MYSQL database

Browse to the database that you are using for your wordpress. Then click on repair. There are three buttons next to each databases - Delete, Check and Repair. Do not click on “delete” even by mistake!

Hopefully it will solve your problem. It did for my blog!
