Subpages not on Index page of Wordpress blogs. 

Background:

I am using wordpress in multiple of my websites. Though wordpress is a “blogging” software, you can easily create static pages and give it a look like a complete “html” sites. If you have only few pages, you should not have any problem and you can use any available wordpress themes. But, if you have numerous pages and sub pages under them, you are in trouble. The question is “Why are you in trouble?”!!

 Trouble with multiple pages and sub pages for a wordpress blog:

Two major problem using wordpress pagination!

1. By Default in most of the themes all the pages and subpages are lited in the index page. Usually all the subpages are treated as pages and there is no wat to tell which one os the main page and which one a subpage.

2. If you have numerous pages, by default it will display all of them making the site menu awfully long!

Solution:

Option 1. Use a theme that has in built subpages command. So that in the index page only the top level pages are displayed and when you click on a top level page, subpages under this appear. But there is only only ONE wordpress theme that has this neat feature. (if you know any other theme with similar feature, please let us know). The theme is: WP-ANDREAS 1.7 which you can view or download. I use this theme in one my website: http//calcuttaglobalchat.net/calcuttablog.

Option 2:. The default code is:

 <?php wp_list_pages(‘arguments’); ?> 

These are the default options for the function (from wordpress.org)

By default, the usage shows:

• All Pages and sub-pages are displayed (no depth restriction)
• Date created is not displayed
• Is not restricted to the child_of any Page
• No pages are excluded
• The title of the pages listed is “Pages”
• Results are echoed (displayed)
• Is not restricted to any specific author
• Sorted by Page Order then Page Title.
• Sorted in ascending order (not shown in defaults above)
• Pages displayed in a hierarchical indented fashion (not shown in defaults above)
• Includes all Pages (not shown in defaults above)
• Not restricted to Pages with specific meta key/meta value (not shown in defaults above)

Now, if you use this whereever you wish to display subpages, it will work fine:
 <?php wp_list_subpages(‘arguments’); ?>
If you have two column, one will still display all the pages and another colum will show the subpages under it.

depth (integer): from wordpress.org

This parameter controls how many levels in the hierarchy of pages are to be included in the list generated by wp_list_pages. The default value is 0 (display all pages, including all sub-pages).

• 0 - Pages and sub-pages displayed in hierarchical (indented) form (Default).
• -1 - Pages in sub-pages displayed in flat (no indent) form.
• 1 - Show only top level Pages
• 2 - Value of 2 (or greater) specifies the depth (or level) to descend in displaying Pages.

So change this  <?php wp_list_pages(); ?>
to <?php wp_list_pages(’title_li&depth=1=<h2>Pages</h2>’ ); ?>

basically you are asking to display only the top level pages.

Option 3: Use WIDGETS!!

a) WenderHost Subpage Widget: A widget for displaying a list of subpage links. The list remains consistent regardless of where you are in the hierarchy.

Simply install the plugin and put it in your sidebar, Subpages will apper if the Top level page has any subpages in it.

b) Subpages Plugin: The Sidebar Widget Plugin is easy to integrate and maintainable content provider for your page, but one aspect was missing from my side. The pages widget displays all pages, but I liked only to display the pages which are children from the current root page. For this reason I wrote the SubPages widget for the Sidebar Widget.

c) Transmenu: Creates a nice looking animated drop down menu for listing your pages and subpages (and more in the future):

d) Subpage listing: Subpage Listing allows you to take full advantage of WordPress Pages’ hierarchy by generating a navigational tree of the pages below them (subpages).

e)SPS-Suite: SPS-Suite is the successor of “SPS -Sidebar Page Switcher”. It enhances your page-list and your archive-list in the sidebar as well as your search function. This plugin is useful for blogs with many static subpages and the wish of a small sidebar. There are several options implemented in the plugin: 1. You can have the sidebar-page-list be more smart, e.g. only pages of the top level and all useful level are displayed, additionally you can hide pages from being displayed in the sidebar. 2. You can extend your search function with a fulltext index, this search uses articles and pages and is restricted to MySQL 4.0 or higher. 3. Addionally to the sidebar function this plugins allows you to display a navigation bar, which can help your users to maneuver through many sub- and subsubpages. 4. Last not least this plugin shortens your archive list to a maximum of month displaying also all years.

b) Most of them are usually included in your hosting control panel.
c) Very easy to insert “Google adsense/YPN” or other ad codes
d) All of them got a very good “support forum”

VIDEO:
Let me talk little bit more about the video part. PHP-director at present allow you to create as many categories you want and you can post videos from YOUTUBE, GOOGLE VIDEOS or DAILY MOTION. No need to upload your own videos. So, if you spend some time, you can create a good video gallery compatible with your site. It will help you to get traffic and make your site immensely attactive. Adsense

I am not sure why but I have never seen such a huge drop in my adsense income for a long time. For last 3 days, my adsense income dropped more than 50 percent. I have been trying to figure out the resons behind it. There are few important thing to note:

1. My CTR did not change much (1-1.5%)

2. My No. Of Clicks did not change much (varies within 5%)

3. CPM dropped >70%!!!!

So, It looked like CPM plays a very important factor in your adsense income. So, I did a research over the internet and found that GOOGLE got a “Smart Pricing” technique.

Some SEO GURU recommended to check the various adsense channels for CTR and remove the LOW CTR and low performing ads to inprove the OVERALL CTR of your website. I have some new sites which I have just started like this one and I really have very low traffic as they are brand new. So, I am going to remove my adsense codes from the brand new sites and keep my adsense running in most popular ones.

Let me monitor my income for a week or two and I will let you all know if removal of the “low performing” ads made any difference or not.

As an alternative, I am going to use “ads for Indians” ad network for the pages which are low performing. You can use any other ad agency for the pages you think google ads are not performing very well. You may not earn as good as google adsense but I hope that you will still see a major jump in your adsense income.

I also reduced the no. of ad units from my sites.

Well, this is my simple tip to all beginners! Do not trust any SEO company if they say you can achieve no. 1 search ranking in google!! SEO companies are numerous. They also make good amount of money. Many do help you a lot to improve your site ranks and visibility to great extent. But, before you spend any money to any SEO company why not do some simple SEO application yourself?

SEO applications are not extremely difficult. There are many small things you can do to improve your search ranking. 1000s of free tools are available online. Use them wisely and monitor your traffic, key words etc. In my later articles, I will give you some quick and easy guide to optimize your site. Again, there is no end of learning. So, read the article first. The article I am recommending is from Google Webmaster Help center. They have discussed various things about SEO and possible frauds in SEO companies. A great article and must read for all who are trying to improve site traffic via SEO companies.

I am again guessing that you are beginner. If you are an expert you can ignore my posts and articles and so on. Here is my simple tips for your first website.

I was talking to my friend in some other forum about the best way to make CV. There are many great ways and tools. In addition to CV, if you have a website of your own, just think how great would that be. In a website you have broader space to talk about yourself, your likings, interests, detailed educational skills and so on. For me and for many of my friends, the first web page is a “personal” web page. Even 5 years back I was not that much familiar with “blogs”. Many free site builders like Tripod, Yahoo etc etc were doing great business providing all you need. They usually give you lots of pre installed scripts, designs, blocks, widgets and so on. You do not need any html code to build your site when you are using their service.

Later, “Blog” became extremely popular. Blog added supreme “interactivity” between user and publishers. Blog is easy to set up. Easy to write, easy to customize and again, you do not need nay “codes/Mysql/CGI..etc etc”. I do not know anything about coding. This post, the site is using a blog software “wordpress”. Well lets get back to the point.

So, if you are a beginner, don’t BUY your first domain. Use as many free servers as possible. Get some basic knowledge  in html. Get free blogs from bloggers or wordpress and build some site just for fun. Always remember, “FUN” part is most important. If you do not like what you are doing, you will never be able to accomplish what you want. It will be boring for you and that’s not something we want.

There are too many cool things out there. It is good and bad at the same time. It is good that you have several options. Bad because you don’t know which one is best so you waste too much of your time in investigation!! So, I will give you my recommendation to get you started.

Things to do to get your first website:

1. Get a FREE domain name : This site will give you a profesional looking website name for free. Example: yourself.tk

2. Get NVU for free: NVU is FREE and EASY html editor. You will need it in many places. Great tool and should have in your collection all the time.

3. Get a FREE server from:

a) Blogger: http://www.blogger.com/home

b) Wordpress Blog: http://wordpress.com/ 

c) Tripod Site: http://www.tripod.lycos.com/

If you are trying to build a site for the first time, register in 3 of them. check them out and which one did you like. Tripod will show ADS and sometimes annoying. Blogger and wordpress free bloads are ADS free and you can easily create a dynamic site in few minutes.

Hope my basic guide will help you. I know I may not be the best. But you at least have a starting point. I wish you good luck with your first website. In later post I will elaborate how can you earn some mone even from your FREEly hosted BLOG or WEBSITE.
